The ingredients of this dessert are very easy to find: base of sponge cake, meringue, dulce de leche, whipped cream, grated coconut, vanilla powder, marron Glacé, walnuts, praline, cream, almond paste and icing sugar for the topping.

A little bit of history

Did you know that the dessert was previously named “imperial”, and that its history begins in the Paris bakery in the city of Balcarce? Then the brand was sold to a firm in Mar del Plata, where they changed the name to Balcarce, due to its origin.

Besides finding the dessert in some bakeries in Balcarce, you can also find it in the menus of bars and restaurants around the city, where you can have a piece. We share with you two of the bakeries where you can taste the best Balcarce dessert.

1) Comoantes

The dessert has been made at this bakery for fifty years, prepared by the apprentices of Guillermo Talou, its creator. According to the owners, the secret lies in the quality of the raw material, and in the absence of preservatives. That’s why it is virtually impossible to export this dessert, since it only lasts a week in the fridge. As a distinctive seal the mark of fire is displayed on the coconut topping.

2) The Jockey Club

This Balcarce bakery, founded en 1962, is a high quality pastry icon, with traditional recipes made throughout generations along with a touch of youth. Besides offering another version of the Balcarce dessert, it has delicious alfajores, cookies and pies. The whole dessert serves 12. It costs AR$ 280 (December 2017), and the alfajores cost AR$ 25 each. The bakery is located a few meters from the Fangio Museum, ideal spot to relax after the walk.
