A bit of history

The building of the shopping was an old prison, originally opened in 1910. For decades, this penitentiary was one the unique buildings important in the neighborhood. Towards the end of 1986, after a stunning riot, the prison was evicted and remained empty for a few years.

In 1992 is decided to begin the recycling and remodeling of the building and in 1994 the old penitentiary opened their doors as the Punta Carretas Shopping retaining its facade.

The recycling project was the Argentine architect Juan Carlos López who was the author of Galerías Pacífico in Buenos Aires and the Uruguayan architect Casildo Rodríguez.

With its opening, the Punta Carretas Shopping renewed the commercial, social and cultural life of the area, making it one of the most attractive tourist areas of Montevideo.
