Knowing where to eat in Rosario is a key, since the cuisine of Rosario offers many options as in every big city. In this post I will tell you what you can not miss!
In general, when we think of Rosario, we think of the Paraná River. And indeed, its gastronomic identity is associated with river fish: pacu, boga and surubí are the most representative fish of the flavours of the Paraná.
From this important river comes the wide variety of fresh fish that you can taste, made to the embers, with herbs and lemon, or more elaborate dishes according to the gourmet trends.
On my last visit to Rosario I had lunch in one of the most traditional grills: Escauriza Grill. Located in the seaside resort of Florida, it is one of the more representative restaurants of Rosario. Its specialty are the river boneless grilled fish.
As appetizer I ordered river empanadas, which are delicious and as main dish I tasted a boga grilled with sauce, which is spectacular! In the menú there are also grilled surubi and pacu, that will be for another visit. And of course, the menu includes sea fish, roasted meats and homemade pasta.
Tip: It is almost mandatory to book in advance, because as it is a popular place to eat in Rosario, if you don’t, you will have to wait for a table more than half an hour. The good side is that to entertain the waiting ,you’re invited to have a glass of wine or a fernet with coke.
In addition to the excellent cuisine, Escauriza Grill is located in one of the best vantage points in the city, which offers one of the most beautiful views of Rosario.
Visiting Rosario involves making a mandatory stop at the legendary bar “El Cairo”, immortalized by the rosarino writer Roberto Fontanarrosa in his book “La mesa de los galanes”. It was opened in 1934 as a typical coffee with pool tables, where the men of the city came together to talk. In 2004 it caught fire, and after retrieving it, it was restored and declared Historical Heritage of Rosario.
“El Cairo” Bar is another typical place where to eat in Rosario: you can have breakfast, lunch and snacks. They offer a very extensive menu and special promotions. In addition, El Cairo Bar organizes a milonga every Tuesday, where you can take classes, and then keep on dancing. And they also organize other musical shows that are advertised on its website.
On my visit to El Cairo Bar, I ordered a “Carlitos” (or “Carlito”) as they say in Rosario, which is a toasted sandwich with ham and cheese but with ketchup. And I also tasted the full “Carlitos” which has olives, egg and peppers.
Rosario is positioning itself in the gastronomic avant-garde scene. In addition to traditional restaurants, a new generation of chefs is seeking to innovate and to insert Rosario as a great gastronomic destination . Proof of this is the Organization of the Gastronomic Week of Rosario, which in this Sixth Edition will take place from 15 to 22 of May 2016. Bars and restaurants in the city will participate with proposals and special menus at promotional prices throughout the week.
Without a doubt, you should make more than one getaway to Rosario to taste its gastronomy.
